Is Feng Shui a Religion?!

How to Create Harmony, Peace, and Health No Matter What Remedies the Feng Shui Doc (or God) Prescribes

Feng shui may seem to be a religion. I have seen a number of feng shui cures and remedies that people seem to clutter up their homes religiously, from red ink on yellow paper that reminds me of the kind that I see in some Chinese Buddhist temples to different Buddhist deities like the Laughing Buddha and Kuan Yin the Goddess of Mercy in a corner of the home. I have also seen a number of acolytes seem to follow feng shui cures and remedies with a compass and swear by its use, even so far as to relate different sectors of the house to relationships and wealth! Yet, there is also an increasing number of feng shui cures and remedies that have no ties to Chinese culture nor any religious significance toward Buddhism, such as the use of gemstones and crystals in different corners of a room and rearranging modern everyday secular furniture around. So why is there such a big range of feng shui applications? Let's get to the root of feng shui to find the answer. Basically, feng shui is about energy flow.

Feng shui is about energy flow in the mind. By using feng shui, we change our mental processing by using repetition. This repetition serves to produce concentration and focus for what we desire in our lives, just as how some people are utilizing the Law of Attraction. The example about the red ink on yellow paper is no different from an affirmation written in any language on any piece of inkable surface (e.g., paper, cloth, mirror, etc.). Whenever we see this piece of paper or article, we recognize what we are using this item for. The repeated visual serves as a reminder to ourselves about what we are changing in our lives. The item serves as a visual shortcut to a mental thought process evolution.

Feng shui is also about energy flow in the environment. The examples of the Laughing Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy serve as objects in one's environment. These examples are also no different than putting a load of crystals and gemstones in one's environment. These objects serve as anchors within one's environment, again as visual shortcuts to add to that which we are desiring to change in our lives. We use objects in our environment to ultimately serve ourselves and our intentions.

In addition, feng shui is definitely connected to the energy flow of the planet. Although there are people who choose to use the Tibetan approach to feng shui looking at different corners of a home and there are also people who look at the different cardinal and intercardinal directions of a compass to determine the best feng shui energy, there is actually validity to why people use these methods. Let me put it this way: the sun will always rise east and warm up the whole planet to make plants grow. Is it any surprise that so many ancient cultures deified the sun or the direction east for that matter? In the Northern hemisphere, in a cold uninsulated house with single pane windows, there is just no way you can convince me to place my bedroom in the northernmost sector of the house. There is just no way that the sun can get to it. I will be freezing cold or have ultra-high electricity bills. In this recession economy, high utility bills is not an option. So would I expect abundance or cash flow if I place my bedroom in this sector of the house? Frankly, no.

So is feng shui a religion? Nope. Feng shui is a common-sense approach to practical matters. With that said, though, if a feng shui master says that such-and-such must be done in a one-size-fits-all solution, then I would most likely pose the question: “What purpose would this feng shui remedy fulfill?” Then, based on my existing resources, I will find a solution that is fit for me.
